Squash anyone?
Hi: Anyone interested in playing squash? I love th game, buit it is hard to find courts or players for the game in this country.. Sat evening or Sunday anytime is good for me. Potentially Thursday evening could work as well. I am not a student at Smith, but though I could find some players here since Smith has the only courts in NoHo. Thanks.

ENGEL TO RUN AS INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE FOR CONGRESS
Michael Engel, resident of Southampton, former Easthampton elected official, Professor Emeritus of Political Science (Westfield State College), and current business owner, is running as an independent candidate for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Massachusetts first district in 2010.
He believes the federal government is wasting time and money trying to fix the old, failed economic and financial system, and that working people have gained little or nothing from those efforts. It is time, he claims, for citizens to start building a new system.
His role as a member of the House would therefore be to represent, work with, and provide resources for those who are organizing for meaningful social, economic, and political changes in America.
Engel’s campaign will be an innovative, web-based, personal grass-roots effort posing a direct challenge to the conventional million-dollar-plus campaigns conducted by congressional incumbents.

Calmer Convocation?
Did anyone else think convocation was less wild than last year? It could have been the scolding faculty speech or just a new student dynamic. I've heard students say it was more tame than years past. What do you think?
Should we change the name of the Smith College Yearbook?
The Smith College Yearbook was originally known as "The Hamper"
In the 60s, the book was no longer called "The Hamper" and remained nameless for several years, until it was titled "Madeleine"
The Proust poem that the current title was lifted from, can be found inside the yearbook; however, many Smithies remain confused about the name, and some are not even aware of what it is at all.
After being called "Madeleine" for around 40 years, it may be time to rethink the name, or at least raise awareness of it. What would you name our yearbook? Would you change the name at all?

Keep your promise to employees who have lost their jobs at Smith!
n the June 2, 2009 issue of the Gazette article “Smith plans $10 million in cutbacks,” text from a letter sent to faculty, staff, and students by Smith College President Carol Christ is quoted explaining that "employees whose jobs are cut will receive an ‘enhanced’ severance package that includes 60 days notification, at least 10 weeks of base pay and supplemental payments linked to years of service.” A generous severance package—if only it were true.
Some of the 55 to 60 people who are losing their jobs due to budget cuts, including faculty members and course support staff, will not be receiving any severance package, according to Provost Susan Bourque. It would seem that an institution that has a “A perennial blessing upon the country and the world, “ the words of founder Sophia Smith that are carved into the steps of the Nielson Library, could do better.
I know that these are turbulent times, but it is important to be honest. It is not right to publicly promise to provide severance packages and then rescind on that promise. Unfulfilled promises can be disastrous to already vulnerable families.
President Christ—in her inaugural speech I believe-- said that “Smith College is a private college with a public conscience.” I urge her to fulfill her promise of providing an “enhanced severance package” to ALL of the people who have recently lost their jobs as the college cuts faculty and staff as an act of conscience and good faith.
Sincerely,
Claire C. Carlson
WHO STOLE MY MT. BIKE!
The past three years I have become very attached to my mountain bike, we had some good times....some bad. On my last night at Smith poor mountain bike went missing. The robbery took place outside of Cutter House between the hours of 10pm and 7am on Friday/Saturday May 22nd/23rd. I admit that it was not locked up, the lock broke the day prior.
Please keep a look out for a Red/Black/Yellow BRAND:Raleigh- 21 speed Mountain bike, the seat is a little chewed up.
PLEASE RETURN IT, I am home now so please put it in a safe location and post the whereabouts THANKYOU.

Job Hunting Tips For Graduating Seniors:
My Advice for Seniors from a Fellow Senior:
1. Make the CDO your best friend right now.
2. Indeed.com and monster.com are really good sites to finding entry-level jobs. Indeed is awesome because it is like the motherboard of all the job sites on the Internet rolled up into one search engine. :D
3. Network! Network! Network! Especially during this crazy recession/national moodswing we have.
4. Always be prepared. Have copies of your resume and/or business card in hand at all times.
5. Good luck!
Posters On Flyerboard
Just a thumbs up. I think each organization should get to put up one poster per event, so for the org that is responsible for Sexhibition, I think you need to delete three of your flyers and keep one on flyerboard. It's unfair for other orgs and students to post their events. Let me see if I can delete them for you guys.
Academy Awards Reactions Continued. . .
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role - Kate Winslet for The Reader
Our Pick - Happy to see Kate Winslet win one (Personally I think she got robbed in 2005 when she didn't win for Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind) although I wasn't that impressed with her performace in The Reader. We have gone with Anne Hathaway for her performance in Rachel Getting Married.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role - Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight
Our Pick - As good as Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are in just about everything, Heath Ledger is clearly the winner here. He took an iconic character, made it his own and created a performance that we couldn't look away from. He did an amazing job
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role - Penélope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Our Pick - Penelope Cruz was great as the firey psychotic artist and we at the Jolt would have made the same pick. Although we feel that Marisa Tomei was excellent in The Wrestler and we wouldn't have been upset if she had won instead.

I can be a forgiving person on Chris Brown's part. Everyone has inner demons and he/she internalizes and externalizes those emotions in many different things. Domestic violence is one primary medium. Yet, there is a part of me that wants to kick his ass so bad. You do not do that to a woman or any other human being for that matter. I am appalled and digusted, yet should I? I did not know the whole story. What do you guys think?

New York Post Chimp Cartoon Compares Stimulus Author To Dead Primate

Why NY Post, why?!?! Comparing Obama's stimulus plan to a dead monkey! So many racial undertones in that cartoon. Things will never change.

Change is Good, YES WE CAN!
For the past three days or so, I have read your comments and we are trying our best to make the best arguments. However, I wish more people who be more patient and learn to adjust to the new site. Your Daily Jolt fairies have been writing messages on the homepage of the old jolt for months about getting involved with the beta site and about giving us feedback about it. Now, you ask, well no one in the Smith and alum forums are not talking anymore. We are not denying you guys your freedom. Like with the old jolt, if you have something to say, anything, say it!! Do not let this new layout deter you from contributing your points of view with the rest of the community. Remember this is your site, your home. We at the Daily Jolt are doing our best to make our minor adjustments. If the Brown Daily Jolt has 5 posts, that is their problem. You guys have the capacity to accept the circumstances and make something good with it. If you do not want to lead this site like the Brown Daily Jolt, then learn to adjust to change.
Your obligation is to continue talking and engaging with one another and giving us the feedback to make this site even better. I do not know why the concept of change and readapting to new things is stigmatized, but please learn how to change. This is one of the greatest lessons to learn in life. Deal with it. Meanwhile, start shocking us with your humor and knowledge. You, the Smith Jolt Community, can make this your place again. We are not stopping you, you are stopping yourselves from change. Thank you for your time, and please provide us with respectful constructive criticism. Have a wonderful weekend.
Exercises That You Can Do In Your Dorm Room!
Seeing as it has been ridiculously cold these past few weeks, there is no doubt that getting to the gym is even more of a pain, especially for those of us living in the quad. Just because you don't make it to the gym (for whatever reason) , doesn't mean you can't work out at all. Women's Health Magazine provides tons of simple workouts that you can do right in your room, including this one that doesn't require any equipment. Check out www.womenshealthmag.com for more work outs and other helpful health articles to keep yourself healthy throughout the winter.
Stuff Smithies Like: #1 Bitching About the Current Food/Weather/Daily Jolt/"That Girl"/Economic Situation
Food: Probably the most-bitched-about subject on campus as of late. And yes, it has gone downhill. Food-related questions that plague the minds of (almost all of) us on an almost daily basis: Why is everything at the Campus Center so expensive? What is wrong with all the microwaves? Why the sudden influx of overzealous door checkers everywhere? Has anyone ever actually used the panini-designated George Foreman grill in King/Scales? We'll probably never know. All we can do is contemplate these questions while we swirl our 3 parts 2% milk and 1 part chocolate syrup concoction.
Weather: Wah wah wah, we all hate snow and walking to class in it and how Smith doesn't have snow days. We get it. Give it a rest, it's not like you didn't know about this before you came here.
Daily Jolt: Self-explanatory. The new Jolt has only been upon us for a day and already the Smith forum is flooded with complaints. On the plus side, the Dining Guide now includes a Bartending Guide.
"That Girl": Of all the possible people to bitch about on campus, the most timeless and socially-accepted subject is "that girl." Everyone knows about and can't stand them. Watch your back though, if you don't know what a "that girl" is, you just might be one. Worse, you might end up accidentally sitting next to one when you stumble into class late and take the first available seat. Definitely a situation to avoid at all costs. If you don't already know what one is, educate yourself.
Economic Situation: For obvious reasons. But what's interesting about it is that despite the fact that the current economic recession is probably the most nationally bitched-about subject at the moment, it is also possibly the least bitched-about subject on this list. Good job, Smithies.
